- What is coffee?
- The term “coffee” originated from the Latin of Coffea, of Rubiaceae family consisted of over 500 species and 6000 kinds of tropical plants and bushes.
- The species of Coffea are rather varied, from the small bushes to timber trunk plant as tall as 10m, the leaves are from purple to yellow but mainly green.
- There are around 25 principal kinds in Coffea specie yet the coffee connoisseurs only get used with 2 kinds as Coffea Arabica and Coffea robusta.
- Coffea arabica
Arabica takes up approximately over 70% of the world coffee output. Ordinary Arabica coffee plant is a large bushy plant with its oval-shaped and dark green leaves, approx. 3-6m tall and taking around 3-4 years prior to the first crop harvesting with oval-shaped fruits. Arabica coffee plant may provide coffee kernels within 20 to 30 years. Nowadays, Arabica is mainly planted in Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Brazil and Zaire.
- Coffea robusta (still having another name as canephora)
Robusta coffee plant may be as high as 10m in form of bushy plant or timber trunk and having a shallow root network. The fruit is in round shape and taking approximately 3-4 years after growing is able to be harvested. Robusta kernel is smaller than that of Arabica. Robusta coffee is planted in West and Central Africa, Southeast Asia and South American countries. Also similar to Arabica, the Robusta gives fruits within 20-30 years.
